Would you say speaking out against EJK is "politics" or not? How about speaking out on the Mau Evictions? Could opposing the illegal curfew in Lamu be politics? How about Uhuru promoting hate against the ICC?
Now if an NGO went to Narok and started water projects to help residents. If the local MP accuses the NGO of politics what would be your opinion?
You are missing the point because "NGO" means many things in the eyes of different people. For many it is another word for foreigners. I reality NGOs which include Community Based organizations such as Chama and Cooperatives are organizations started by people. They are not government departments and are outside the dictates of the authorities. That is why they are NGOs.
Laws that limit the amount of money NGOs can get are inherently un democratic. It is the same as setting limits to how much a Kenyan abroad to remit to relatives at home. This archaic and even Moi did not contemplate that. Of course it will not work. We have seen this before in draconian states.
When Moi targeted Wangari Maathai, she had her funds coming in via Tanzania. Money can come in via diplomatic bag. We have ways of having local International Companies get paid abroad in exchange for dishing out local currency. NGOs will simply go to those "exchanges". The loser will be GoK.
I agree, but NGOs should also stick to their jobs and avoid poking their noses in politics. They should avoid aiding civil societies with money which only ends up being abused.
